MAVS was initially developed by researchers at the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS) at Mississippi State University It is formally managed by CAVS and the MSU Office of Technology Management, with input from the MAVS Software Foundation (MSF) advisory board.
The MSF was created in 2026 with funding support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Pathways to enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) program to support the distribution and sustainment of MAVS through open-source software initiatives.
